BART riders save over 200,000 gallons of gas a day by taking public transportation - Full Image

The series Between Above and Below consists of six collaborative artworks by Hughen / Starkweather. The series was commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission and was exhibited in 24 pedestrian kiosks along Market Street for four months in 2007. In each image in this series, the artists isolated and juxtaposed forms and patterns derived from built systems and natural and mechanical movements along, above, and below Market Street in San Francisco. The images were later produced as archival pigment prints by Electric Works.

In this image, shown en situ along Market Street in June 2007, Starkweather worked in ink and gouache to create marks based on the BART route through downtown San Francisco. Hughen's background marks are created with a single shape from an engineering template. Using that shape, Hughen creates a geomorphic image, referencing the layers of rock bed that move along the seismic zones in the Bay Area.
