Hughen/Starkweather has been commissioned to create
a permanent public artwork for the Union Square Central Subway station, opening in 2017. Lines from topography maps of San Francisco along with marks from Bay Area commute pattern maps will be embedded in layers of translucent glass that comprise the roof deck and front facade of the station. As commuters enter the elevators and descend into the topography of the city, the lines and commute patterns will cast shadows, creating a real-time layering of abstraction and its source materials.
